Don’t forget to write he’d said
And so you did but he never wrote
Back and day after day you’d look
Out the window for the mailman
And the letter but all the mailman
Brought was bills or circulars which
He proceeded to push through the
Mailbox with gusto but no letter no
News nothing just his promise to write
If you wrote first and your mother said
He isn’t worth the ink Casey ain’t worth
The time putting pen to paper and her
Face had that I told you so kind of gaze
Her glasses enlarging her brown eyes
And her mouth opening and closing with
I told you sos and still you waited by the
Window still and hoped he’d prove your
Mother wrong and write and put those
Kisses on the bottom those inky crosses
Like birds in flight and what if he’s seeing
Some other? A voice said in your head the
Same voice that picked fault in him from
The start how he was dressed how he
Talked and always saying don’t go too far
With him don’t let him have his way too
Soon but you hadn’t listened you went
Ahead and let him lay you after the first
Date let him shaft you in your mother’s bed
While she was away and you had to clean
Up and wash the sheets and spray the room
Because you knew your mother’d smell a
Man a mile off and still he never wrote and
The voice still nagged and the mailman still
Brought the bills and junk and had that look
That seemed to say no letters for you today
Sweetie pie no letters for you and he’d stare
In at you with laughter in his big blue eyes.
