Aged Adonis

You loved me— and it wasn’t long ago—
you loved me for my youth and strength and fire
because I was Adonis— and I know
you loved the thought we were alike, desiring
more to be me than to walk with me—
and maybe once I’d thought that was enough.
I’m longing that you’d love longevity
and hold me when my leather’s dry and rough
and when I witness to mortality
within my faded youth. I’m grateful for
the place my life possessed when I was free
of age, but don’t you think you’ll love me more
if you’d appreciate the life I’ve grown
in my adulthood— or am I alone?

you pose age old questions, beauty and strength vs. wisdom and loyalty, among many others .....there is so much we can learn by listening to the elders......history is so important.....without it we spin in concentric circles...unable to touch the outside.....and relationships have history, just like the world does.....a poem that gets you thinking, joel
