when Patty Griffin sang
Mil Besos
I always cried, my reaction
oddly unnatural
it was just another love song
but she unleashed these emotional fangs
provoked the dead somehow
this extraordinary primal voice
like she was stirring old cauldrons
an old life of mine buried in layers
of decaying history, a me
wrapped in uncountable timeworn blankets
matted together with perspiration
and extinct blood types....
I've learned not to fight it
to ride it out, feel the connections
soak for hours in her nightingale tub
inexplicable voices
inexplicable voices

Re: inexplicable voices
good capture and delivered well.
Re: inexplicable voices
sometimes . . . no explanation to how a voice, a passage of song, can penetrate so deeply. "...timeworn blankets matted together with perspiration and extinct blood types..." conveys image and feeling well...
Re: inexplicable voices
thanx terry & mnazzinator.........it's odd but every once in awhile there's this song that transcends the lyrics, perhaps even the music, and the lone power of the voice works its magic....

Re: inexplicable voices
Steve, I think this reads, sounds, impacts even more powerfully than it already does if written in the present tense. See what you think:

We should not mind if on our ear there fell. Some less of cunning, more of oracle...Thoreau

"her nightingale tub"
This whole thing grooves, but this last line, well, can I have it?
