seen just about everything
a man can possibly see
'neath the trench coats
of unshaven professors
of the gutter that claim
to know the penal code

in this withering town
the experts of despair
the walkers and the talkers
ashes to ashes
slime to slime, there is
little time, little rhyme

little regard from
the sergeant, the captain
the preacher, the father
the disenfranchised lumps
ooze along, each sidewalk urchin
peddling their very own self

disparate desperate medicine
trading a this for a that
a soul for a pint, an eight ball
for a fuck, but to this day
I still haven't found a merchant
of love

why, why didn't the economic gurus
plan this better, how could this be
left out from the system, the plan,
surely some bookish underling might have
spotted this obvious omission, oh no
it's that goddamn printing company again !

grim situation. i never thought as a kid back in the 50's-60's that life - the character of our society - would take a nosedive for the rest of my days.
