sly midget

we come to the poem
it is not just a cup of words
a receptive container of lies
or costume street of signs
it holds its own meaning
within a context of givens

the image rises like a word snake
all names dates places incidental
a moment before the universe
was formed from a drop of light
the poem comes to us with offerings

something is the fetish of nothing
so the poem appears in all its finery
before the grand finale of the idiot
and all else is a false start dressed in God

yet the elephants remember the long blow
and the symbols bleed in the second act
we wait for the plot to unfold like a rubber
and clap at the horrific monstrosity on the page
the poem comes home with the sly midget intact

and you could not wait to read it in the last moment
