Working Class 101

For those of us who slept through English Lit.
and passed, by virtue of the random guess.
Who could not add our own distinguished crits
when parsing Lord and Byron with the rest.
The stilted tomes with inside references
became the mats beneath our foaming brews
and sudsy minds washed out whole sentences
unless explained by bookish friends we knew.
With few exceptions poets lean to port;
insist they champion the working man.
Yet rarely understood and much ignored
by those they claim to fully understand.
de Pompadour don’t sell in Wal-Mart aisles;
here, two-bit corner whore, is more the style.
