With Jesus and a lover for a friend,
you’re certainly not lacking one in me—
and yet I can’t ignore you, so pretend
I’m something more than distant; let me be
a better neighbor than my life would prove
and let me join my benediction to
the closer, more consistent, praise of love
that better company will share with you
today: the One who’s founded marriage – not
on sex, good health, liquidity of wealth –
provide you with communion as it’s sought
in love, in pure fidelity, in healthy
mutuality—forever—now—
and, in so doing, guarantee Love’s vow.
