one night I tried to catch
the monsters in my brain
they were more elusive than
I had anticipated,
I was drinking so fast
the bartender said slow down
let it hit you, but I belted down
the scotch anyway, broke the snifter
with my teeth, chewed the glass
til blood ran from the corner
of my mouth blotting the flow
with cocktail napkins, and the red
was the most vivid part of my day
so I swallowed the shards to cut
a pathway to my heart, and the slivers
sliced open blocked passages
clearing the channels
to temporary contentment
and the gremlins scurried like roaches
to another loser's head.
