the rubble will not be televised

(revised)

spew it
like a 900-foot depleted uranium christ
pray to the FOX talkin' points a-rattlin'
and the polls, they keep a-slippin'
the people keep askin' questions
like those old columbo shows
peter falk kept comin' back
sir, just one more question
and the murderer smirked
late for his morality play
that detective is back
askin' questions

in the war room,
weathered moral men pound leather
push pawns and masturbate over legacy
take justice to a cheap motel and fuck her hard
for the holy charred screaming hell of it
for the armor-plated numb of it
for the buzz, mostly the buzz

pray for the cleansing blood of capital
for the atonement of our new markets
to mass-produce our spirit, scrub our identity
we lurk in icy black depths of fear, poised
we clutch new weapons of destruction
muttering, "freedom, sweet freedom"
sold into bondage by shadows

can we do what we must
when it is beaten out of us?
or summon a river from desolation?
no one writes home anymore

Wow! Never thought I'd find another poet who put Peter Falk's Columbo into a poem.

This one is no kangaroo court.
