Into the long grass
and she says

let’s lie down
and look at the sky

and so you do
not telling her

about the field mice
or adders

that may lie
in the tall grass

away from the midday sun
and she turns her head

and looks at you
and says

Mother wouldn’t like
me lying in the tall grass

with you or any one
for that matter

she doesn’t understand
that people can lie

in the long grass
and not do

what she fears
we might do

and you see
how unrushed

the clouds are
moving at their own pace

all shapes and sizes
and she says

Mother always thinks
the young think of nothing

but sex and fucking
and you notice a swallow

go across the sky
and hear rooks cry

and she says
laying here with you

is like a minor heaven
and she put out a hand

and touches your hand
and gives it a squeeze

and leans across
and kisses you

on the lips
and closes her eyes

and you notice
an aeroplane

pass far off
in the blue skies.
