Lulabelle

She takes your heart and
leads you to a bone cellar,
where others of her kind
are buried away.
And now she sleeps between us,
all happy, as if she hadn't a clue,
that this is exactly what she had
to do.
Who knows what led her to our doorway,
how long any one of us will stay?

Lulabelle is a mixed-breed dog, big ears, long legs, and Chihuahua-type face rescued by my daughter, retrained and now lives with Barry and I. There are still slight signs of abuse. She fears men, especially tall men. It takes time to trust again.
