Dali on Dali

Dali was a great surreal artist
his famous mustachios pointing
in splendid phallic points
like hands on a crazy clock
he said his melting watches
were prophetic of modern physics
and who are we to disagree
his drawings of religious objects
seemed to morph into modern absolutes
about unconscious superstitions
that we drag along from the dark ages
Dali wanted to paint the world in exact
absurdities, and leave us with lobsters
and telephones and burning giraffes
Dali was critical paranoid, even his cane
was arcane, and his eyes spin like pin wheels
we have to ask what really is surreal or surrealist
Did Dali lose himself in this quest seeing infinity
can we now say, that if you have seen one Dali
you have seen them all, is this true of Picasso
not so? Dali thought he saw himself before, he
was born, said it was paradise, but that being born
was "paradise lost" was he referring to Milton
was Salvador seeing himself like Lucifer, the rebel
angel, or was this some more of his critical paranoia
Alas, Dali was Dali and his famous signature said so
his famous mustachios pointing
in splendid phallic points
like hands on a crazy clock
he said his melting watches
were prophetic of modern physics
and who are we to disagree
