talking to myself

I've always dug this trail
the built-in solitude, that
slippin' into darkness thing
the burning sun banished
like a red-headed step child
so I begin

you're right brother I cannot say
civilization isn't moving forward
in each war we find inventive new ways
to kill each other, so you got me again
but somewhere in the wind I hear
the words of Eldridge Cleaver as well

the price of hating other humans enough
to kill them means loving oneself less
and on this beautiful stroll that seems
like a bad trade-off, look
at that red-tailed hawk gliding without
the flap of wing

the filtered sun cannot bully me
the branches are arms that shield me
entice my mind to consider George
Bernard Shaw and well maybe he was right
hatred is the coward's revenge
for feeling intimidated

I sure hope we wake up, history
is rife with examples of warring empires
and their subsequent collapses, yes
the shades of night are falling fast
but I think
I got a pretty good look anyway
