For the Love of Jesus
If only I were prepared to put my trust in you as others do.
I smoke my cigar under the Station Café's hanging baskets;
ketchup bottles occupy vacant tables in 90-degrees heat;
diners stay inside; barman polishes glasses under Mata Hari's
naked butt; Christian tour bus swings by headed to Capitol Hill,
tourists in t-shirts: bleeding hearts with daggers
and morose Shroud-of-Turin faces. I recall all of this
as I swig my Imodium cocktail at 3:00 am,
think of the tattooed guy hustling to his train,
a word on each elbow: "Spider. . . God."
