The Age of Anxiety

I.
the anxiety of age
in the age of anxiety
it pulls the brain
with a cat's claws
slower than usual
and never without fur
you drank a gallon
of espresso
before turning to bed
it was actually gasoline
poured on the fire
the despair of unpairing
the demise of surprise
the challenge of weather
whether you go
or come
i will be waiting in pain
only gasoline will put out
the flame
only water will burn
the age of anxiety
anxiety of age

II.
What is the sound
of the answer
to God's great
interrogation?
a scream of rage
heard by no one
the inaudible vibration
of a tear landing
on a cheek
a thought racing
past the finish line
after all the competitors
have quit
a dream
trapped inside
a body prison
the words i could have

III.
Alone.
and then Not.
Alone and then
Not.
A loan. A knot.
A lone knot. A
loan. Not.

IV.
one side of the card
reads
Do Not Disturb
the other
says
Housekeeping Please.
he hung it
from his big toe
and lay on the bed.
looking toward his feet
there was the plea
for cleaning.
looking past it
in the mirror facing the bed
was a disturbed
backwards message.
this is the sign
that signifies the soul.

From the great hall of Neptune
you can watch Alcatraz
with the sun setting beside the Golden Gate Bridge
as you eat overpriced seafood
and drink overpriced wine
while outside a man
silently shakes a cup at tourists for coins
and drags around a ragged blanket
in the harsh Bay wind.
