the bet on regret

I hear the wind blowing through me like a leaf
I tremble in the gusts of loneliness and grief
I became a thief of fire because I saw the dire
nothing is as it seems keeps howling around me
I looked deep into the white flames of your passion
that burned way down inside your being of seeing
we come into this world on a dare not a prayer
if we could count all the tears through all the years
we come into this world and we are hurled into it
how many lifetimes does it take to shake to see it all
how many lost loves do you meet in the dark street
walking along the shadow lanes of abject dejection
always moving in the wrong direction toward the one
at what cost do you allow your deepest secrets to come
through the stratosphere of your most hidden self
if we embrace on some forbidden night in the storm
will we then be torn away from each others arms
when all the stigma and static rages around our trist
at what price do we venture beyond the trite of right
and what motive do we carry with murder in our hearts
that read mystery novels to keep the mystery away
but when I tell you that love is the greatest mystery
that you will ever have to defend in the end
will you bend like a tree in the torrents of change
will you think it strange that my words hurt you so
in a way that you cannot explain that you can't gain
a hold on what is real and what is a phantom of desire
will you breathe slowly and allow fate to hesitate
I have been playing with your feelings as they fall like rain
into the glittering gutter mirroring the abyss of the infinite stars
