lovers kiss at the table
i do the crossword puzzle
as if this newspaper game
were the equivalent
that doesn't mean i am sad
it means i notice
i smile at them
for them
when it works
it's a rock opera
with masterful instrumentation and killer voices
they grab each others hand
they laugh
they squeeze, they fondle
it causes me no pain
i smile inside
for i have sat at that very same table
