Beneath Sheer Ice

Sheer ice glazed
Across emotion,
Barely insulating.
Fragile
Wind crusted blanket
Covers her fear.

Breath held,
Ears strain
For the footfall
That will obliterate
The silent snow
Of her waiting.

The moisture
Of her heat
Swirling upward,
Suspended
In the frigid air.
Momentum’s end.

Gazing from
Beneath the ice
Like a cat gone too far
From home,
From the known.

A supplicant,
On ice torn knees,
Begging
Spring’s kiss
On frozen lips.
