The Keys

those two Colombians visited me again this morning
coffee and weed, today is my 21st birthday
and I won't be celebrating it in my hometown
but here on a floating landmass bathed in limitless aquamarine soup

I am far away from the family and friends I left in Baltimore
sitting on a veranda, yes yes, I have a real veranda to sit on
and drink up coconut, cuban bananas, and avocado with my eyes
snort the salty oxygen, watch girls ride their bikes in printed cotton dresses,

their thighs are golden bronze and pedaling, to driftwood beach
two blocks away, and I picture the frolicking dogs in the surf and sailboats bobbing
at Mallory Square, the ballyhoo dancing on their tails off in the distance
'cross the top of the water so clear, that looking down

is the same as looking at the horizon

nothing to do with your poem which I enjoyed very much, but it just gave me a feeling like I used to get when I listened to this song.
[Chorus:]
Mama dear
Your boy is here
Far across the sea
Waiting for
That sacred core
That burns inside of me
And I feel a storm
All wet and warm
Not ten miles away
Approaching
My Mexican home.
