poetry of the people

Religion was never the opiate of the people
poetry was the junk of the beautiful people
religion is the anti-visionary drug of the people
now days what we call it Prozac or Xanax
Jesus was a poor excuse for the revolutionary
they hung them on the crossroads
between heaven and hell, empire and mire
and still they equate Christmas with war
And today the Pope sounds like a socialist
he wants to kick all the priestly whores
out of the vacuous Vatican that holy can of worms
but since God was the spy in the sky
they wanted to be the God of surveillance
first they want to put us asleep with infotainment
they trot out their puking pundits to fill us with dread
it's not the corporate generals in the pentagon
it's the godless evil doers that hate our freedoms
If Jesus was a rabble-rouser he hated our freedoms
he hated how we are free to be mindless consumers
if poetry is the real opiate of the people
it is not to put us in a super stupor
it's to numb us just enough to the stupendous lie
so we can even think long enough to see beyond it

Maybe religion is now more a drug of pasicifaction than ever, but in some cases an excuse for war and terrorism. Dig the poem. 8)
