Silent, sitting motionless
Surrounded by vivid greenery
Unblinking, gazing down at bottom land
Needing no church, mosque or gilded temple
No more truth than a wood thrush's beautiful song
What that preacher told me had to be a lie
Animals do have souls, there are spirits
His words seem meaningless
Here in these woods today

A barred owl by the stream
Roosting upon a dead branch
Surely seeing me while I'm watching her
Nothing alive here will remain undetected
Millions of years, the knowledge in her black eyes
Far older than the oldest creation stories
Long before religion blighted the world
Predating speech and writing
I don't see that god here

when you are in the woods, you can't help but feel the connections to all life, animal, mineral, the flora, it's powerful.....in view of Citizens United, as we watch corporations total disregard for planet earth, where the bottom line always trumps life, we should be able to see that Corporations ARE NOT PEOPLE....a good religion to adopt might be Defender of the Earthism

hmmm, now listen to me up on my soapbox this morning...ha...a good poem can spark this !

Spinoza might say God and the owl are one, but that matters not as this is a well structured meaningful poem.
