smell of sickness

when i smell that smell
i know
long before
they do
i cannot describe it
nurses say that it is a gift
it feels like the post office
the dead letters dept
40 years later getting one in the mail
except not
because the person is alive
standing next to me
yammering about ailments
what they take for it
what they can an cannot do
