The Template of Dr. Rue

paneled doors swing open
enough for us to see familiar faces
fingers that beckon to us like Lorelei
from the apex of a lush cliff

we totally grasp their desire
yet opt to issue lackluster reasons
why it would be out of the question
to slip through any portals tonight

we are very busy, we are very tired
our house is very dirty
we piss away sacred opportunities
like barely tasted lager

we act as if gestures are merely mirages
we fail to acknowledge the majesty of the desert
the saguaro cacti
each spine a story of struggle
the sego lilies , each blossom
a lifetime of trying
the bearded dragons, each footstep
placed ever so recklessly
in the evolution of sand

we miss this boundless beauty
that blends in ideally with the surrounding terrain
But...It's there
there, among the distractions of the oases' bling

It's there alright, in all its pastel finery
magnetic traces of love
that involuntarily seek attraction
they beseech us

we know we should go
instead....we settle
into the dust of our habitual templates,
into the default of our listless escapes

Oh my .... it's SO true! This is a terrific piece packed full of fine imagery, Steve, and it speaks to me. It describes how I hide and keep the Dor shut and I know other people do, too. Quite a universal experience, unfortunately. Why do we do that?

"It's there alright"

We need to recognize it and go explore wherever it takes us. Thanks for writing this!
