not playing pool

I have been thoroughly trained
to be productive
it was beat into to me as a little boy

to work mindlessly on this-that or the other,
to volunteer for overtime, to dust
the tables with lemon pledge, mow the grass

dig the road dirt from the treads
of the tires on my pick-up truck,
on my knees with a toothbrush

I was lectured, leisure time would leave me
behind the 8 ball in the game of success,
but I wasn't a pool player

so I ignored the reference

funny poem - so much of what we become is how we were raised - before we know how to discriminate the world for ourselves . . .
