fantastic plastic

saw these tiny little grocery carts
mingled in with the larger herd
you know, those conventional steel mesh animals
we all steer down the trails of the supermarket
there was this long thin springy rod
attached to these miniatures
with a bright yellow triangular banner flying from the top
that read, "Shopper in Training"
the woman next to me says,
"Ain't that cute "?
I was horrified ! !
Cute ? ! !
is it cute that we indoctrinate children
into to mindless consumer zombies
as soon as they are able to walk, my god
they don't really even need to be able to read that sign
just need to push it along , watch what Mom or Dad do
grab whatever you like from the awesomely displayed goodies
and hurl into the basket on wheels
how convenient
thousands of varieties of cookies
an entire city block of cereal boxes
with the friendly faces of the Frankenberry monster
as Count Chocula drools from the top shelf at the prospect of a tender young neck
how utterly simple
grab it
toss it
charge it
I imagine the CEO Vampire
plunging his claws into the suggestion box
pulling out a piece of paper and reading to himself
" If I were the manager of this grocery store
I would fabricate
some cute little plastic cards to hand to all the kids
with darling little bunny rabbits on them
and fluffy little smiling ducklings
hand each kid a card and a lollypop whenever they come in."
