Our Monarch

what happened to the monarch butterfly
they call it "roundup" for milk weed
but that name they call that chemical
is really what they would to do to us all
all your dreams of those magical winged insects
with the wonderful colors that children
need to see, that the child imagines
that they will always see, not just in a movie
evil corporations in the pocket of your senator

if Chuang Tzu dreamed he was a butterfly
dreaming he was a Chinese philosopher
then who dreams we are a green planet
dreaming we are a corporation that is a person
through some convoluted judicial subterfuge

how did we arrive at such a warped vision
of the world, of the very stuff of our natures
that we should allow the corrupt powers that be
to poison everything that grows for ill got gain
that they should foul the rain, tare the wings
off of butterflies, with all their hideous lies

if you remember what it was like
to see those beautiful purple flyers coming back
to the places where they return to, where they belong
and they sell that liquid death in all Walmart stores
and that you can eat another GMO don't you know

the bottom line - survival. we're no more civilized that our earliest relatives. We're all struggling to survive this life doing, saying, believing, eating, drinking, stealing, deceiving and every other goddam thing we can in order to survive. No different from any other living thing.

That fucking Monsanto began with that very premise... something to feed the family evolved into a super-threat to life at the expense of life. How fucked up is that?

Thoughtful piece, rR... as usual. gracias!

I wonder at that premise..."something to feed the family"
that the so-called most intelligent people cannot see the writing on the wall.
corporations are not people, they are not of the people or for the people
or for the animals and plants that grow, they are not for the good green earth
they are for the elite who would destroy all that to spite their faces.

I agree. But in our desire for survival, the inevitable happens when what one does becomes a valuable product which brings wealth. Capitalism. And wealth brings power which brings greed along with it wrapped in a black velvet cloth. When wealth is threatened greed comes out of the wrap and defends wealth and it's shadow, power.

Power changes the rules for their survival at the cost of the worker. This has been an ongoing struggle throughout our evolution - capitalism vs socialism, monarchy vs peasantry, Czars vs Proletariat... the fight never seems to end no matter the definitions. The final Truth, yin/yang, is the answer - that duality runs the world, not one side or the other.
