& shot again

some girls didn't want
the poetry shut up in a closet
they said picture it
they said speak it
they said play with the thunder
the daughters of hunter-gatherer women
on the landscape before the time of the prophets
in the crazy days of communist threat
before all the big books on the shelf
got coated by dust
in the days of radio that shut down at midnight
after Howdy Doody but before Deadwood
those kind of girls that
were specially spiritual before they became mothers
i have songs about them all
and their veneers of graffiti
those days when i ejaculated paint
onto spiderwebs
and into the cream cheese
to see what would happen
libraries of stone & wrought iron
on a hill in town
i always went straight to the poetry section
because i liked it best
i read & read of men
& women of whiskey
i came from there ready
to shoot it out
in the streets
and man, was i excited about it
all spangled up with the words of
the women of the ancient courts of Japan
i had good bullets made from the words
of Izumi Shikibu who said:
"... yet how deeply
my body
is stained by yours"

i shot straight with level aim
& i shot crooked & wild from the hip
i shot standing still
i shot on the run
i shot in the open
& i shot from cover
& if i missed
i loaded back up
& shot again
