There is gutted church
in the Upper Peninsula,
near Calumet, near Superior:
no pews are left for prayer,
no altar for the Body;
only stained glass remains
with all its colored language,
all its Latin echoes
Were we there, sweetheart,
on that Sunday morning?
I swear we could still hear
the chorus singing
We laughed but later that evening
you sang to me in the darkness
and your voice was like hearing
water from a fountain; when we loved
I dreamed I was being baptized
again and again
in the Upper Peninsula,
near Calumet, near Superior:
no pews are left for prayer,
no altar for the Body;
only stained glass remains
with all its colored language,
all its Latin echoes
Were we there, sweetheart,
on that Sunday morning?
I swear we could still hear
the chorus singing
We laughed but later that evening
you sang to me in the darkness
and your voice was like hearing
water from a fountain; when we loved
I dreamed I was being baptized
again and again
