Dooby built a trail in the desert,
lined with sculptures of stacked rock.
He inscribed flat stones with Zen quirks,
and laid them out beside his works,
his Elvis in a cape made of beer cans,
his Aphrodite with full pink rock tits.

Along the road you'll find an octagonal hovel
called Sagebrush Network, good for some shade,
erected on pine limbs, roofed in hog wire and sage.
Faces of old TVs are cut into a thick netting
wrapped around the six of the eight sides,
and the flat stone inside reads,
"to change channel,
turn head."

Yes, dial in canyons or the waterless sea,
the plane of light, the faraway nebulae,
the rare air, its heady, lurching whiffs
and silent intensity in the interval,
still as cracks in the hardpan floor.
A lull to wreck your ears.

Sip a little bourbon.
See Walter Cronkite's face in a rock.
Go out on the energized plane and return.
Fall asleep under the glow of an old Zenith,
its celestial sheen, angelic opalescence,
Cassiopeia's vainglorious "W."
Solar massive will come early
on Dooby's road.

Thanks. I traveled a lot through the desert west (as you might have guessed) not too long ago, and places like these, completely unexpected in this case, kicked my ass. They're hardly even "places," more like states of mind in all of that open expanse.

thats cool...i lived for a short time in New Mexico....saw their petroglyphs....beautiful....reminded me of that time/place

"Solar massive" -- yeah, a bit obscure . . . burning, blasting desert sun, that's all.

Yeah, it's a true story. The Burners are familiar with this road . . . even if they haven't actually gone down it.

this is marvelous, just fabulous and vivid imagery, nice rhythm and flow

the Doobies played in my home town in the early 80's
didn't get to see them, sure wish I did

Thanks shadow and Wired. Yeah, as much as I really dig the Mojave and those gnarly Joshuas, Nevada became even more intriguing to me-- its endless, stark, wide-open vista and rock sculpture, and so many long "trails to nowhere," without fences. The Black Rock Desert is pretty mind-blowing . . .
