Where We Live

Old men on the sidewalks,
bundled up: some with walkers,
women with orthopedic shoes
Younger ones by the beach,
men in fedoras, smoking;
women with blue veils, covering
blackened eyes
Others farther down the street,
in ramshackle brownstones, born
in music, dying in skepticism
Still others follow the pebbled lanes
to white cottages by the water
where women laugh and kiss
fish; to stone towers that tilt
toward olive groves by the sea,
all waves rippling in blue time
bundled up: some with walkers,
women with orthopedic shoes
Younger ones by the beach,
men in fedoras, smoking;
women with blue veils, covering
blackened eyes
Others farther down the street,
in ramshackle brownstones, born
in music, dying in skepticism
Still others follow the pebbled lanes
to white cottages by the water
where women laugh and kiss
fish; to stone towers that tilt
toward olive groves by the sea,
all waves rippling in blue time
