trigger

Post by shadowplay » April 13th, 2015, 5:17 pm

warning!
the space between comfort
(of marginalized groups) and freedom (of speech)
everybody's talking bout 'ism' topics in the social justice blogophere
overdose (fatal) body horror bones (animal)
being touched in explicitly feminist places
graphic image of a wrecked PT cruiser
weapons depicting rape gun
violence needles the word 'retarded'
forced captivity
self-harm
calories in a food item for fucks sake
college is not an emotional 'safe zone'
(I'm only half kidding)
slimy things
fear content suitable for prompting intrusive thoughts
invoking phobias for some even a ceiling fan can induce debilitating reactions
fragile post-traumatic
(guess which half)

chee-hee-hee-hee !!

I just tumbled upon this subject one day. I'm so clumsy.

It appears that colleges have students getting all whiny about wanting trigger warnings on course syllabuses and other materials in case there are images or even just descriptions of things that might prompt an OCD reaction or cause some kind of upset because of past trauma. I found an exhaustive list of all the trigger warning items -- one of them mentioned 'calories in a food item'...and I thought how frikkin ridic. Like that's going to re-traumatize you or something.....

thanks for the remarkable remarks....

my warnings were usually a slap upside the head, or a kick in the ass....jeez....it's not that I'm insensitive to trauma or anything, and don't believe in violent discipline, but we have clearly gone too far trying to take a universal position that doesn't offend anyone...how did our young people become so thin-skinned ?...thanx for bringing this to light

can't explain it - never heard anyone else ever say they were creeped out by him - to me he was like some kind of invisible nothing voodoo creature hiding behind a face that looked normal but nothing behind it was and the fact that no one else ever noticed this freaked me out even more - i didn't even want to think about him which, of course, made it impossible not to keep any stray thought of him outta your head -

- don't know why -

It may be because you are extremely perceptive. You may have picked up on something that most people never noticed. I don't know what it is. Could have been something spiritual, some kind of bad mojo. Just cuz he's a celebrity and he has talent doesn't preclude him from having something not too cool going on inside --

Apparently, in real life (according to gossip columnists as well as made-for-tv movie makers), he was a bit abusive to Lucille Ball. I'm not sure about the whole story. I don't keep up with those type of things. But perhaps something about their real-life relationship showed through when you saw him, mingo, and that's why he creeped you out. Who knows?

Some people are afraid of clowns. Seriously. :)
