Happy Anniversary, Dear

After the feasting, after the laughter carries
far into the night
We have always returned to console ourselves
beneath a cotton blanket, a silk sheet,
our legs like thin leaved branches

It’s worth the risk to grow old and troubled,
both of us scraping the walls of our hearts
Love is worth everything, much like dipping
fingers into nonfat-butter or cleaning a table
of all unnecessary words
Year after year we re-meld, and year after year
the year comes to an end and another begins
Still, a wedding night is never over, rather
it is a late sun spreading over a faded sofa,
a married kiss and the sweetness
of the leftover wedding cake

I "appreciate" the marriage more, I'd say in my case. We have struggled at times, but I was damned I was going to give up. We'll make it now, for sure.
