what if photography was banned
man and women were left with only words, and
what if simultaneously all the paintings
in all the museums were destroyed
and writers , poets, were now responsible
to paint new pictures with words to replace visual art,
then what if it were made illegal to own pens, pencils
brushes, ink, paint, crayon, chalk
would the poet throw his hands in the air, cry
like a wet hungry baby, or would he carve his words
in a sycamore tree with a rusty screwdriver
or his fingernails need be, wouldn't he fashion new tools ?
etch all the stories in mountain rock colored with blueberries
urine, blood......wouldn't the poet whisper in the ears
of red tailed hawks, peregrine falcons, ospreys, so they may soar
above the range of gunshot defecating his messages on the heads
of his oppressors ?
