He told her that he had eaten brown sugar
Because he woke up hungry
She offered him twenty dollars
He was so happy for one dollar apple juice
A bag of grapefruit-some bananas
A bag of frozen chicken breasts
He had the face of a child
There were moments
When she could not listen to him
But she knew his secret now
He was starving
And had no idea how to survive
In this big bad assed world
His drawings reminded her
Of the coloring books she had as a child
She waved good bye
The happiness on his face as he got off and walked away
In the Portland night
Of having tricked the wolves from his door
