The Falconer

At dawn, in the crisp fall air
out among the woods and fields
the early sun kisses the fire of falls colors
Rambling the back country roads
the young man seeks his hawk
it is the eyes of love and admiration
that scan ever post and pole
turn up to the sky, see him in silent flight
the eyes must be keen to spot the juvenile bird
the knowledge true with deep respect
passed down in time from the ancient ones
the son of earth is home
the hands must be both gentle and sure
so also strong and quick
careful of long, sharp perching talons
no simple task to master
a steady quiet spirit of real strength
such a wonderful thing
to carefully hold this amazing creature
as we drive home
seven times we went
seven times we waited
seven times we asked
the answer given
in the privilege of the company of our hawk
now the connection is complete
we are of the falcon clan

When we speak we are afraid our words will not be heard or welcomed. But when we are silent, we are still afraid. So it is better to speak. ~ Audre Lorde
