farther down the road

one day there will nothing left to say here
and I will sit at this table and rue
for a second the loss of a mind that did its best
in an often unforgiving world of dogs
that prefer to eat other dogs

I'll reflect on the sacrifices a bit and grin
at all the nights I can still recall
with the glimmering dark anejo, the
ganja from the field out back and a cheap
ballpoint pen, there will be no need to shed
any tears for a man that has eaten the worm

tonight I write with gratitude
the river is falling over the dam of my years
the whitewater crashes into the rocks
of time, and I navigate it all like a seasoned tar
between the blue lines, with aplomb and a swift paddle

I'll steer that cosmic raft to the gentle pools
filled with fallen purple rain, I'll jam with Prince
I'll dance with the go go girls in white vinyl mini skirts
I'll sing strange songs not of this earth
yes I will...one day.....but not just yet !

In ways I dare not explain, I honestly cannot think of
lines of poetry that better sum up where I am in my life
than these:

"one day there will (be) nothing left to say here
and I will sit at this table and rue
for a second the loss of a mind that did its best
in an often unforgiving world of dogs...
"

It's uncanny, really.

These lines, too, sing:

"I'll reflect on the sacrifices a bit and grin
at all the nights I can still recall
with the glimmering dark anejo, the
ganja from the field out back and a cheap
ballpoint pen, there will be no need to shed
any tears for a man that has eaten the worm
"

And my favorite two of this work are these
(they are poetry, true poetry, the best
metaphor I have read so far among the posts
here at this site):

"tonight I write with gratitude
the river is falling over the dam of my year
s"

:-)
