the huge brown mongrel
across the street
barks at everything that moves
robins and gray squirrels,
hummingbirds.....
but especially human enemies,
he patrols the yard like a cur sentry
on duty for the queen
he has a purpose, he earns his keep !
he sprints to the fence to warn
another violator pedestrian....
he snarls at them to move along,
they try to speak sweetly to him
but he's having no part of it
a good watch dog, he knows
cannot get soft, he barks louder,
he jumps off the ground like lunatic kangaroo
growls you better shut up stranger
and get the hell off of my god damned sidewalk
'cause you don't want to see what happens
when I come over that fence....
