a leaping bound and a venison grin

I move like a forest ninja
come face to face with a tawny doe
she stiffened like a child playing freeze tag
instinctively I sang to her

'Home Home on the Range"
in my applewood tenor projection
the seductive twist of chords
like a white hot zephyr band

tickling the canopy of green
"Where You and the Antelope Play"
I crooned better than Mr. Crosby
for ten long minutes

we had this thing....mutual trust
her head cocked at times
like the family retriever...then a bolt
out into the meadow to join her friends

I sang Goodbye in my made-up deer voice
I thought I saw her turn her head
hallway through the tall lemon grass
to smile back at me, wow...in mid-stride

Nice poem

I wonder, do forest ninjas wear green?

I am picturing this in my mind. I like it.

The reference to Mr. (Bing) Crosby, I like the Mr., is very cool, as is the "playing freeze tag" of the deer in the headlights of your eyes.

I believe you did !I have talked to an owl with my harmonica . The owl was just a few feet away at dusk , some really neat sounds came back from him . I can see this ,with the deer , happen to you as you write it. I find the critter coming through even though it is in people words.
Animals read minds more openly then we do.The Apache say the animals still talk to one other and to us but we have forgotten how to listen, I have read similar things said by other indigenous folk.
I am curious is this a real story as I suspect? I enjoyed the poem it has a nice open feeling with a quiet underlying amazement .It is always just magic to really make contact. as you say, you know it in the eyes.
