destroy all clowns

clowns are out of control
who are these creepy bozos
that are appearing at random
but what kind of clown
comes out of a fun house
and not a circus
what kind comes to frighten children
and not to bring silly antics
how does the hobo with a painted face
and floppy shoes become a luny that
appears out of nowhere suddenly
and might have a big round red nose
but the menace is no laughing matter
this reminds me of stories in a certain book
that are like skeletons of meaning
that we are given to read as children
but there is no flesh and blood
on the bare bones
we are given the boogie man
before we have a chance to formulate
our own thought
and then the funny clown
distracts us from before
we can decide for ourselves
what is funny or not
now the clown has become another kind of terror
but it is really the same old clown
just a little more or a lot more exaggerated
a poet is not a clown
a poet is the anti-clown
the poet does not dress in a silly costume
and walk around like a goofy idiot
or try to affect creepy gestures
just to feign some nervous response
that comes out as a laugh
but a poet might bring a smile to you
when you are a child at school
before they make you a fool for the rule
