poets don't stick together
poets stick apart
but their apartness is a kind of togetherness

if that sounds like a contradiction of terms
maybe it is, but poetry revels in contradiction
if only to say as many things as possible
in a short space,

what I thought about poetry
when I began writing, is what I felt
when I read the poets I found, and the ones I heard
reading their works live, the world was very different
when I heard a certain poet in my area
read a line about a wave of emerald crash on the shore
I saw that line crash on my mind
if one poet stood up and read
was some kind of street bohemian that seemed to appear
out of an alley with strange words all over his aura
I could see their journey in my mind's eye
I could see the lands they have traveled through
even if it was in one poem they carried with them
