1984 in 2017

sales have gone up
if you did not get 1984 before
or upon the date arrival

if you thought the future was a
jackboot stomping your face- for ever
as you read the book
and then put it down

did you think "war is peace
freedom is slavery
and ignorance is strength"
did you think this was more
then a imaginative work of fiction
was Orwell an artist or an agent
we he warning us or programing us

did the big brother seem like a cartoon
does the president seem like a buffoon
did the clock strike thirteen
is it a sign that people are waking up
that 1984 the novel is suddenly very
popular in 2017, what does it mean

... ever more controversial, the "war is peace, freedom is slavery and ignorance is strength," but that's kind of what we went with.

What I meant to say was, as a child of the times, when I was growing up I remember a recurring Nixon soundbite (before they went instant) . . . "Peace through strength" (war-making ability). It made sense to my child-mind, but oh those weapons, the guns on those old warships..

I remember having to read 1984 for an English class in high school, I had too write some kind of essay, I remembering comparing big brother to television, the teacher said but you can turn the television off, maybe you can turn it off but can you turn off news speak. It is like that excuse for preparing for war. Einstein said that you can't prepare for war and end war at the same time. He also said that you can't solve a problem by using the same problem. 1984 and Animal Farm were revealing works but Orwell belonged to what was called the Fabian society as did Aldous Huxley .
