been down so long looks like up
was a kind of beatnik view
those fifties poets were not clutching crystals
but they saw poetry in the most mundane
of places, which is what the fifties was
as Burroughs wrote... breakthrough in a gray room
a lot was going on behind the scene
in those gray days, but television
was now invading your living room
invaders from outer space
the fifties poets were trying to break out
of the straight jacket of fifties conformity
some early hippies carried signs
on the street, they were the sign
of the times, we needed some kind of howl
from the depths of modernity, and mass mentality
and then Dylan sang, I will come following you
in the misty morning, and the fifties woke up
