the eyesight gets fuzzy
overnight, there are muted objects
set about my path, it seems
the sandman may have glued my eyelids shut
knuckles in the eye sockets, rubbed
don't seem to work today, water splashed
from cupped hands feel good, but doesn't
improve my vision, A Depraved New World
is upon me, and who wants to see Trumpland
clearly anyway, the dark dystopian rantings of a mad king...
it does remind me though, the downtrodden will rise
like the new growth every amazing season of springtime
the withering of a single leaf on a maple tree
that moment of detachment when the stem lets go
and the shriveling leaf blows through the air
randomly coming to rest in a corner of the backyard
left to further decompose with promise of new birth
it comes to lie in a pile of its comrades, new flora
muscle soars through the winter chill, the cycle of life
is a most formidable foe to the unnatural breath
of demagogue dragons
