Lydia Woke 1958

Post by dadio » September 30th, 2017, 4:39 am

Lydia woke to grunting
and soft giggling.

Her big sister
and boyfriend
were in the other bed
having ago.

In the darkness
Lydia didn't know
of such things,
being only young,
in the smaller bed;
it seemed like
a birthday party game
and a bit of a lark
in the dark.

The other bed
was creaking
and the bedsprings
squeaking;
her sister breathing
profanities into the night;
but then she giggled,
so Lydia assumed
must be all right.

Then it all stopped;
silence ensued;
then whispers
of a harsher kind.

Lydia feigned sleep;
kept every muscle still
as if dead;
breathed shallow
as if out of air,
capturing unseen
images in her head.
