Solstice

67 winters I've seen
this is number 68
and still the magic endures
bewitching me with nostalgia...
an afternoon sun
low
glimpsed through sugar-coated trees
with light pure and clean
unsullied by summer haze
illuminating the canopy
from below...
shadows long and elegant
like a woman's legs
curving across virgin snow...
the sharp sting of cold on my face
the cozy warmth of wool socks
and heavy gloves
footsteps squeaking on packed powder
weary satisfaction
after a morning spent
exhuming my car and mailbox...
and, oh -
that night sky -
Orion
Sirius
the Pleiades -
I am still the 12-year old dreamer
browsing that book on astronomy
in the town library
where steam radiators hiss and click
and hardwood floors creak and groan
and wet boots leave puddles
in the foyer

watching breath
puddles on wooden floors
crisp star-tales

Stars reflect in the waters surface
Trace the future with the imagination
Colorfully transform into the light
