Heaven is a place where nothing happens

Post by mnaz » March 10th, 2018, 9:58 pm

From a smoky old jukebox
on the farthest dusty edge of Texas,
a pointilist speck on a sagebrush ocean,
itself a fleck on a rock circling a star, itself
a speck on the span to the next star, itself just
a speck of galaxy, itself just a speck of universe,
a trillion miles out the sun looks like a star, and it's
a hundred thousand light years across a milky way
and you're still not out there if you could get there.
You'd have to go a lot farther out, between galaxies,
between light, where not a single star is visible, not
even if the nearest one had gone supernova so long
and far ago that you might have caught a glimpse,
the pure unimaginable intergalactic space,
out where nothing ever happens.

Not sure why I'm into the Talking Heads lately (it will pass)...

The song has "personal meaning" too. I thought of it on a quiet motel porch on the road just after 9-11-01, when "heaven" did seem like a place where nothing happens. Except sunset and a couple of moths bouncing on a metal awning.

my crazy father used to tell me that this is it
heaven or hell
what I want to make it
In spite of my fears
I am happy to be alive
in this best of all objective fact space-time worlds

the poetry helps
thank you 8)

At last count, we've confirmed about 4000 exoplanets, most within 20-25 light-years from us. That's just a teeny pocket within our galaxy, which is but one of many in our local group, which is but one group of many - the further we look out (and back in time), the more galactic clusters we see........

......yet we're asked to believe that some supernatural being chose this one insignificant little rock to send his only son because we're the only ones important enough in all that cosmic vastness to warrant redemption.....

.....and that the earth is flat (and hollow), and only 6000 yrs old....

What do people who've studied all their lives know? It's all there in a book written thousands of years ago and translated from translations of the original, extinct tongue; and assembled from letters written hundreds of years earlier by people who were never there. Allelujah, brother - say Amen.

I think less about the universe
Than when I was young

Back then; everything was exciting
I was too stoked
Now I go outside at night and look at the stars and hope that the aliens are coming soon

Not sure our human minds are able to conceive of EVERYTHING!
It may well drive us into the realm of madness where nobody knows WTF we're talking about...
What good is that not only to others but to ourselves..??
Lost in some outer-stellar movie where time takes on a whole different meaning
where death is outlawed so we scramble for safety from the dangers of being
ditching Mind as we succumb to that which contains the Universe... and more,
the beyond the beyond where our mind's will never comprehend solely because we needn't.
Our life is long enough before sheer boredom sets in and we whine for yesterday...

Probably not. But we think we're pretty smart.

I dunno -
I think that if you were in heaven
No matter how awesome it is
If you are an artist
You will want to paint clouds orange
And sculpt an angel in cloud dust
Especially if you knew some kids below would like
To believe in angels
But needed proof
I think that if you were a writer or a story teller you might have gatherings where people could tell their stories
And so on
So I do think it depends on who you hang around with anywhere
Really
Not that I expect to go to heaven
At all
Although it would be nice
But maybe heaven is an ideal
A reason to learn to trust the unseen
Listen to the wind

That's problematic - thinking our thinking measured by our thoughts results in talking to ourselves in hopes that someone other than us will listen, because we damn well don't do a good job of listening to anyone with any sense much less wisdom.

I think that might be called something like dialogue? But if you've already reached heaven, or at least something pretty close to it, financial-wise, why should you pay too much attention to the complaints of the rest of the world?

We need an average person to be President. That will never happen.

Creativesoul, I would paint clouds orange too like early sunset (pink streaks aside). Always loved the orange.
