notches on a dial of inching awareness

buried perhaps at times
in landslides of fuck-ups
poorly chosen lovers and philosophies
the idea love can thrive on neglect
and you re-watch the roles
in the secular passion play
repeated with different actors
delivering the same uninspiring performances

a standing ovation in a pipe dream theater
the maintenance man walks by with his faux pas toolbox
like Alfred Hitchcock making his cameo

the game is rigged, nah...just a bunch
of amateur card players going all-in
risking a pot of gold on a few minutes of joy
and hell, it wasn't that bad
I knew when to hold most days
knew when to fold sometimes
knew when to walk away when the sledgehammer fell
knew when to run when I left through the window
trying to get my pants on
Kenny would have been proud of me

Side note: I was working in my aunt and uncle's shop when that song hit, and so was my cousin. He kept saying how much he hated that "cowboy music" (he didn't have enough seniority to change the radio station). That was my first job...
