Cursive

- on a bench in Salt Lake City
sits an old man whose youth was spent at sea
now his mind is an abstract black and white painting,
his mind is mountainsides host to mists
he's been through a horse on a desert with no name
he remembers the Four Seasons singing Sherry
in the days before everyone's eyes were crossed out and their mouths sewn shut
he knows how to write in cursive

Ahh, one who masters their memories
may enjoy their many reminisces
stretching back in time, in time,
when those times held meaning
and made one who they've become
only to lock themselves into a then
which solidified into a frozen Now,
which demands a repeat after repeat
rejecting what could be a presence to open...
thanks. el mingo, for the inspiration
that sent that SOC from there to here.
(writing in cursive began for my in grade 4, if memory serves me as it should.

I like the poem!
(Is it really true that they don't teach kids to write in cursive any more? If so, what do they teach them? Printing? Or not to write anything at all unless they have electronic device? LOL)

Thx for the read and comment, Doreen - brings me joy

and yes it's really true, instruction in cursive is being taken off the curriculum -
we are becoming living fossils before our very eyes -

I remember my first fountain pen and the pleasure it gave me to write with it. The way the paper absorbed the ink.
Living fossils sounds like a title for a horror flick, "the night of the living fossils"
oh well better read than dead, I don't mind me being a living fossil beats being a dead one, dead and buried for gazillion years, don't sound like much fun to me.
a cool poem, sorry about the ramble it was just so good a memory I had to share it

Thought I'd replied to this - musta forgotten to Submit. I was taught Kidder cursive way back in the late 50s, & as we all do developed my hand around it. Until the keyboard, my script was actually legible. But now...

dinosaurs tiptoe through stolen time
secret cursive messages in bottles
laughing at our own humour
(in short - might as well enjoy our cynicism, no one else gets it)
