highwaymen

travelers we are
highwaymen,
in corvettes of speeding imagination,
laser darts, with the desires of Casanova

we want to see the stars
up close, or at least near enough
to illuminate a new path of inquiry
we pass on the passe

even if the road has potholes
beyond the crooks on crooked highways
we'll risk it all for a better view
we won't overlook the Overlooks

we'll hike back in with our backpacks
dreams zippered in waterproof pockets
the excitement of the unknown to us
is all we need to instigate

a trip, with or without the LSD
we are by nature explorers
looking for the new world,
looking for the old one

built to climb mountains,
spelunk the caves
swim out to the horizon
run in our bare feet

there is information in the dirt
clues lead to more clues
answers lead to more questions
we want to find something

True. And sometimes just simple stuff too. Like walking my new neighborhood. I moved to a place on the side of a hill-- with a view, nice, but lately the hill itself intrigues me more-- the shape of earth, promontories, ravines, the network of stairways running between streets carved in the slopes ...

Of course the stars are hard to see with so much urban glow (can we really call it 'light pollution?'). Damn man, now you made me pine for another road trip (with at least a couple of stops in the desert of course, to see if the stars are still there) ...

what a gift!
honor to be present,Steve. Wonderful poem.
Mike, happy new hill to you. (My desert home has been duly subjugated to light pollution. I, too, seek star data)

we hu'mans know so much of what we yet know
and yet we *must* march on and through the ages
set before us like a banquet without the chairs
we only wonder as we wander what are we seeking?

and that is the impetus driving us madly with promise of tomorrow to bring is whatever the fuck it is we seek.

Hu'man mistake soils the soils, poisoning the very ground we shall one day turn into
bleached dreams under the screaming sun's heat preparing for the next generation of life.

(thx for your right-on-piece that inspired me, Steve Weaver (?) )
