the swans are cresting the banks

in the valley of spent cartridges
there are opaque images
in the traverse, of what happened
or
maybe it didn't, I mean
the tendency is to clean it all up,
all the fuzzy fragments
laid out on the amateur archaeologist's table
this puzzling puzzle in shards of time....
I need to revise the revision it seems
polish up any rusty misgivings....
but my vision is getting poorer and poorer
and I can't quite distinguish my sterile fiction
from what was possibly much worse,
like that time in Key West, Oh
never mind , i probably made it all up
but if I did it, anything off color that is
I'd like to confess now and get on with
the atonement, I mean....I'd tell you
the truth if I knew it, but I don't know
what to say other than I'm fairly certain
I was no angel

but even in my gravely voice
I'd like to sing a song of therapeutic redemption
that would make the world as I know it
feel a little better, and
if the words and melody were just right
and sincerity flowed like ancient lava
the old "truth" might be incidental...
so let me have the stage tonight
the swans are cresting the banks
